Police Partnership Award

Distracted Driving is a serious and complex road safety issue and a top priority for CCMTA. The Police Partnership award will honour police partnership activities focused on efforts to reduce fatalities and serious injuries due to distracted driving. All submissions are welcome but in particular we are seeking submissions describing activities and initiatives to address distracted driving, including the lessons learned and results from those efforts. Submissions should reflect the collaborative interaction of the police community with local, regional, provincial, territorial, or national highway safety partners, either in government or the private sector to address distracted driving.

As a component of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025: Towards Zero - The Safest Roads in the World, this annual award encourages the police, road safety partners and the public to “Rethink Road Safety”.

The CCMTA Police Partnership Award was introduced in 2006 to honour the achievements and service of active individual police officers, or units in developing key relationships with private or government sector agencies involved in highway transportation safety at the local, regional, provincial/territorial or national level. It recognizes police efforts that build partnerships in support of strategies which reduce injury and death due to road crashes.

2018 Award Recipient

PPACommunity Distracted Driving Campaign
Constables Karen Sinnaeve and Winand-Bacon, Essex County OPP (Tecumseh and Lakeshore)

Constables Sinnaeve and Jacqueline Winand-Bacon used a community safety, consultation and engagement approach to address distracted driving, and energized thousands of high school students to be the voice against distracted driving in Essex County, Ontario. The center piece of the distracted driving campaign was a student driven project creating distracted driving slogans for display and radio public announcements. The winning design would be reproduced into removable signs to be used by students, municipal vehicles and school buses. In addition, groups of students from four high schools created public radio advertising spots which were aired daily by a local radio station with a listening audience exceeding 100,000 people daily. Through building partnerships, the officers created a multipronged campaign that directly engaged a critical target group. Changing the behavior through our students in the age of technology has proven to be a powerful tool embraced by education and political leaders. This community initiative spearheaded by Constables Sinnaeve and Winand-Bacon could serve as a benchmark for others to follow.
