OVERVIEW
The air bags project group, formed in 2002, made up of both government and industry representatives was approved by the CCMTA Board in December 2001 to evaluate the issue of rebuilt and recycled air bags including a review of available research and the process and procedures regarding the assessment and installation of recycled air bags.
The objective of the group was to provide the practical national guidelines for those jurisdictions that wish to allow the recycling of undeployed airbag modules. In May 2002, recommendations were approved by the CCMTA Board to ban the use of rebuilding airbags, and to allow recycling of undeployed airbags to occur only where sufficient, stringent controls are in place to ensure their safe and correct installation.
In 2003 and 2004 guidelines were developed by the project group and in May 2004, the Standing Committee on Drivers and Vehicles (D&V) and the Board approved (subject to a legal review) a detailed set of national guidelines for those jurisdictions that wish to allow the recycling of undeployed airbag modules. The project group, led by Mark Francis of BC, remains in place on an ad-hoc basis to monitor and address the development of restraint system emerging technologies as they relate to the recycling of components. The group meets once per year by conference call and provides a report to D&V in May of each year.
